Elon Musk Just REVEALED Orbital Flight Launch Date, Booster 3 disassembly.
We could soon see SpaceX’s Super Heavy rocket make a debut flight. The monstrous rocket will propel Starship to orbit with 29 powerful methane-fueled Raptor engines, capable of producing over 16 million pounds of thrust.
On Saturday, August 14, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said “First orbital stack of Starship should be ready for flight in a few weeks, pending only regulatory approval.”
The company will not be able to launch the vehicle until it obtains regulatory approval from federal agencies. SpaceX must obtain authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that manages air traffic in the United States. The FAA is pending an environmental review of the Starbase facility launch pad. During the debut orbital flight, SpaceX plans to launch from South Texas and aims to splashdown off the coast of Hawaii. A launch date has not yet been established, it is unclear how long the FAA will take to complete all its reviews ahead of the flight.
Even so, SpaceX will continue to get everything ready for its orbital launch debut just “a few weeks” from now – far sooner than most expected.
Let’s talk a little bit about the previous days. On August 6th, SpaceX stacked that same vehicle – Starship 20 (S20) and Super Heavy Booster 4 (B4) – briefly creating the largest rocket ever assembled. However, the feat was equally a symbolic photo opportunity. Starship S20 was demated less than an hour later and shipped back to the factory shortly thereafter.
Though they’d had Raptors installed and been stacked to their full ~120m (~390 ft) height, neither booster nor ship was truly complete and at least 20% of their engines had yet to be qualified at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas test campus. Both needed a week or two of additional work – mostly just wiring avionics and installing secondary and tertiary plumbing. Curiously, on August 13th, Starship S20 was once again rolled to SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch site in a partial state of completion, where it now sits beside the orbital launch mount for unknown reasons.
