Group Announces Second Silent Statement in Tecumseh, Michigan

A silent statement is planned to be held in Tecumseh, Michigan on Saturday, June 6th. Tens of thousands of people have marched through American cities to mourn George Floyd and demand police accountability.

Mid American News was on hand for the first series of Lenawee County protests. the first was in Adrian, Michigan on May 30th.

Jennifer Sharpe-Powell reached out to Mid American News and asked if we would share the decision of the group to host a second protest. Below is a tweet from the first protest in Adrian.

The protest will be held on the Boulevard in front of the First Presbyterian Church. the group will gather on the sidewalk in Downtown Tecumseh. “This is a peaceful event,” says the description of the event on Facebook.

The full description of the Facebook event reads:

“A SILENT STATEMENT FOR ALL THE LIVES LOST DUE TO THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN!!! Enough is Enough. My family and I will be on the Boulevard in front of the First Presbyterian Church on the sidewalk Downtown Tecumseh. This is a peaceful event.”

Jennifer Sharpe-Powell replied to our request for comment:

“We started this because my daughter in law was/is scared, angry and hurt by what is happening. As she is a black woman living in a small town where the majority population is white, and sometimes she has not been made the most welcome, she wanted her voice heard but in a peaceful respectable way.”

“My reason is because my family is biracial, and wanted to give support to my daughter, my family and show not only them but our community that racism will not be tolerated. This protest/silent statement is raise awareness about racial injustice not only in our community but around the entire country.”

On the national stage, Attorney General William P. Barr has defended an aggressive law enforcement response. He also has acknowledged “long-standing” concerns with police that were exposed by Floyd’s death.

The FBI has already announced charges against two people who were caught with weapons and other items meant to cause destruction during otherwise peaceful protests.
