Is gender equality important? Can gender equality be achieved? If yes, how can gender equality be achieved? With the improvement that we see in the modern world, it would be insensible to say that it can’t be done. But statistics say that even with the current pace of initiatives undertaken towards gender equality & social inclusion, we would take approximately 108 years to achieve gender equality. If we wait that long, due to the prevailing gender pay gap/ wage gap, the opportunity cost would run into billions or trillions of dollars, which naturally translates into the lost potential for women and also for society in general.
One of the very simple ways of dispelling gender discrimination from people’s minds and to eradicate gender disparity from society is to create a curriculum of gender equality for kids. So why is gender equality important in education? The minds of kids are soft as a sponge. If what occurs in their external surroundings is blatant discrimination against women without complaint, they will accept it as the norm. It is the institutions’ (schools/ colleges) to teach or impart the sensible way to treat fellow human beings so that everyone around us is benefited.
Now that we have briefly discussed the solutions, let’s have a look at the question at the root – where is gender equality an issue? Let us look at gender equality with an example. When women do not participate in any economic activity and take care of households, they lose out on careers and potential job opportunities. This is one of the major reasons (although not entirely) for the wage gap between men and women. Since long, it has not been taken into account that the very woman who takes care of the household is responsible for creating a conducive atmosphere that enables the family to lead a peaceful life. Not only that but, as in most cases, she could be single-handedly responsible for how the children turn out to be. Such a tremendous influence is exerted by a woman who’s not taking part in economic activity of any sort but is responsible for creating the foundation of a strong family, which is in turn the foundation for any successful civilization. Only recently have economists realized these facts and termed it as “social capital”. But of course, it is not something that could ever be quantified. But one thing is very clear – Gender equality is clearly linked to development. Several countries, especially the Scandinavian ones, are living proofs.
Workplace sexual harassment has been shown to be a severe social stressor at work. Sexism can affect anyone, but it primarily affects women and girls. But here’s the queen bee behavior of women sexually harassing men. Yes, that’s right. Male victims of sexual harassment exist too and more so in the parallel universe.
A short film on gender discrimination which shows what happens when society is controlled by women in the parallel universe.
