The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster Happened 35 Years Ago Today

Today marks 35 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

The accident occurred on January 28th of 1986 nearly immediately.

The shuttle was just 73 seconds into flight when it began to break apart.

The world was horrified as all seven on board were killed in the incident.

The crew included schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.

She would have been the first teacher ever to enter into outer space.

Crew members included Commander Dick Scobee, Gregory Jarvis, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, and Judith Resnik.

The co-pilot of the craft for the mission was Michael J. Smith.

NASA’s first Teacher in Space Project was designed to inspire students.

They also aimed to praise educators and spur interest in science and space exploration.
