A volcano in Africa has erupted and sprayed “fountains” of lava just miles from a city where 250 people died almost 20 years ago.
Panicked locals suffered flashbacks to that tragedy and fled their homes as the night sky turned a reddish orange while Mount Nyiragongo, a volcano in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, erupted on Saturday.
Journalists said the city of Goma was put on “red alert”, there was “panic” as people waited for updates from the authorities, and part of the city “was illuminated only by the glow of the eruption” following a power cut.
Witness David Iyakaremye told the Mirror that lava was spewing from the crater like a “water jet”.
Dario Tedesco, a volcanologist in Goma, a lakeside city of two million, told Reuters: “I can see high lava fountains.”
