New York Times Crossword, Friday 6/4/21:
Really solid offering! Thought the grid was quite clean with some nice entries (EYESORES/INEEDANAP/TOPBRASS/ESCAPEPOD/REALITYTV). But what I really appreciated was all of the wordplay and misdirection in the cluing. The clean fill combined with clever cluing made the puzzle feel difficult in a fun way. Way better than a puzzle with difficult spots because of tough proper nouns or trivia (only tough proper nouns for me were MIN Jin Lee and EURYDICE, which both had reasonable crosses).
The only wordplay that didn’t quite land for me was the clue for OCEAN (What’s always found in bed). The OCEAN certainly as a bed (the sea floor), but I don’t think of the OCEAN being *in* bed. Am I missing something here? Also I feel like ASEA usually means literally on the ocean while ATSEA usually means “befuddled”. So all of my cluing gripes were ocean-related.
I really liked the clue for ESCAPEPOD (Space out?) since it’s both wordplay and you need to read the word “out” as meaning like a way of escaping. The clue for HONEYBEE (Small organic food producer) also brought a smile to my face.
26s on the Mini and 8m7s on the daily puzzle.
