Car Brokers have Secrets to Buying a Used Car
For many of you a new car is out of reach.
According to the automotive online resource site www.edmunds.com while new cars sales from 2007 to 2008 dropped by 16 percent, used cars sales fell by half that at 8%, and certified pre-owned car sales were flat.
“During the downturn in the economy, many car-shoppers hunted for bargains in the used car lot,” observed Edmunds.com Analyst Joe Spina.
Now two valley car brokers are trying to make sure those of you looking to save money on a used car dont get burned by buying a lemon.
We’ve heard some awful horror stories where people buy a used car and they find out 2-weeks later the transmission is not working and they have to spend $4-to-5,000 to get it repaired, said Paul Nagy.
Nagy and his wife Tanja Miller are auto brokers who just over a month ago launched the DVD How To Buy a Used Car Without Getting Ripped Off!
In it the pair walks you step-by-step through what you should look for in a used car to help you decide whether you should walk away from the deal.
They say inspecting the car and finding faults like worn tires can also help you negotiate.
Nagy said, So theres a lot of things as you are going around that are either deal breakers or negotiating points.
For example, they say when you review the engine oil Miller explained, what you want to see is a nice golden brown, if theres any creamy consistency similar to mayonnaise then that engine has basically a blown head gasket and its no good.
Miller said to check the transmission turn the car on, put your foot on the brake, and when you put the car into gear like drive or reverse if there is a delay of more than 2 seconds or you feel a jolt dont take the car. Miller said youd want to, walk away from that vehicle.
A lot of accidents are not reported, said Nagy, people will just pay cash to get an accident repaired so it doesnt go on their insurance so their premium rates dont go to. So its very important for them to check around the car every step of the way to make sure that car has not been in a accident.
One way to check if it has been in an accident Miller said is to look for its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stickers.
You are going to find them on the edges of all the doors, she said if you see a sticker thats been painted over, that means this door has been replaced or repaired it means its been in same sort of accident.
The same goes Miller said if the sticker is missing.
A missing VIN sticker could indicate that a panel like a fender or the door has been replaced due to an accident.
Miller said, With the economy the way it is right now with people going and buying used cars because not so many people can get qualified for new cars its just a perfect time for this information to be out in the public.
Nagy said, we really found over the four years being auto brokers that we love helping people. Its so great when you help someone find their perfect car and they run up to you and give you a hug and thats what we are trying to achieve here. We want a product where everyone can have access to this information.
