Fires in Chernobyl, Kyiv Oblast have been raging through the radiation zone for over a week. There are now there are concerns the blaze is coming dangerously close to the infamous nuclear reactor. This news comes just a week after Ukrainian officials discovered a huge radiation spike in the area where the fires began.
As the fire continues to spread, there are growing concerns that if it comes too close to the reactor, which exploded back in 1986, there could be radiation contamination. Yegor Firsov, head of Ukraine’s state ecological inspection service, confirmed that radiation levels in Kiev were ‘within normal levels’ last week.
As of April 9th, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that background radiation levels continued to be within the normal range around the capital city. Watch footage of the fires below.
