An international team investigating the origins of COVID-19 has been told by Chinese officials there was no accidental leakage of disease from a Chinese laboratory. Despite that, the team of scientists has not ruled out that possibility to this point.
On Wednesday World Health Organisation experts visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology in search of potential clues regarding the original source of the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus was first discovered in Wuhan, with the city becoming the early epicentre of China’s outbreak last year.
It has been suggested the city’s “wet market”, selling seafood and wild animal meat, could also have been the origin of the pandemic. It is commonly believed by scientists that the novel coronavirus passed to humans from an animal species, most likely a bat.
